21 Best Ways for Making Money with Writing

Sharing is caring!

I think you would agree with me when I tell you that the hardest part of making money with writing is knowing where to find writing gigs and what to do with them when you get them.

The problem with trying to search for places to write and not being able to find out if they are legitimate causes us to spin our heels without making the income we desire. I searched everywhere looking for the place where I could accomplish what I wanted. Then I started hearing about ways people, people like Robert Bly and Brandon Gaille, were making real money using their writing skills.

Robert Bly uses web copy, kindle publishing, and copywriting to bring in over $10,000 a month and has become one of the most accomplished copywriters of all time. Brandon uses his websites to generate income from over 1,000,000 visitors to his site every month.

I am going to share with you some places that are lucrative markets and will allow you to also step into the field of persuasive writing and join the ranks of other huge moneymakers.

1. Write articles for blogs, magazines, and journals

This can be thought of as the traditional way of making money with writing. This should conjure images of the traditional author like most think of. It’s entered by using reference books like, The Writers Market, to find magazines, journals and sources where you can submit your work or a proposal for an idea you have. There are rules and guidelines for submission before they will even accept your manuscript, so be prepared.

Here are some tips for utilizing this method in making money with writing:

  • Network, with other authors and support staff such as publishers
  • Edit the product before submitting the manuscript via their requirements
  • Tailor your cover letter with each submission
  • Research publishers and find the one that will work best with you, personally, not just in a genre

2. Write Kindle E-Books

One of the ways that people fulfill their desire of being an author is by creating their works and self-publishing their works on Kindle and its various platforms. They can have success doing this and in a much better way than doing traditional publishing scenario but you take on the role of author, promoter, editor and marketing. This should go without saying, though, that this is not always easy and it is certainly is not for the person that thinks they can just write a book and be a best-selling author right off the bat.

Here are some tips for getting started:

  • Research what you’re writing about
  • Do keyword research to find what others want to read and then create material based on that
  • Get a professional cover design
  • Create and author page to market your books with

3. Create Collateral for content-hungry businesses

This may seem to vague unless you are familiar with the term as it is used in writing and marketing. You do know what this is as well as most people. It is simply creating content for sales support such as brochures and sales aides. Their main purpose is to make the sales process easier. You would find this a lot in both B2B and B2C operations as both market their products and services to who their prospective clients.

I will leave you with some ideas about some key things to focus on when creating collateral content:

  • Always focus on the customer
  • Know what buttons to push for conversions
  • Know the product more than the sales people know it

4. Become a copywriter

This is a direction you can move in that will open a lot of doors and lots of various possibilities. When you become a copywriter you learn the skill of writing sales copy which can be used to create many of the income opportunities we are listing here. Persuasive copy writing is simply creating words and putting them together in a certain way that causes a change to take place in your reader. The goal of this is to cause the reader to convert from a reader to a customer.

Here are some things to remember when creating copy:

  • Know your customer better than they know themselves
  • know your product well…better than its creator if at all possible
  • A good copywriter often knows the product better than creator

5. Build a blog

This is one of the first things people think of when they think of working online now and making money with writing. The thing is that some just get out there and start writing and think people will flock to their site. While that’s a nice thought, it’s not realistic at all. You have entered a field of millions and often billions of bits of data out there that is trying to get our attention. You must make yourself stand out or you will never be noticed to the extent you want to be seen. Some tips in various sections in this post will give you information on how to create a blog. Blogs tend to be the foundation of building an income online and can be used as a standalone process or part of others.

6. Pitch a guest post

This will be something you can look at when you begin to be established in your blog. Other bloggers and content creators look for people to appear on either their podcast and also creating posts on their blog. The main thing they are looking for is to make sure you come across as someone that can add value to the blog you guest post on. They have an established audience and they want to continue to give them information that is valuable to their life.

Here are some tips:

  • Do your research before contacting the blog host
  • Find some common connection and use it
  • Visit their about page and find out who they are
  • Use your findings and include in your subject line for request
  • Learn who their customers are and what need the blog meets
  • Ask yourself, “Does my expertise add value to the audience’s needs?”

7. Write for old college as alumnae

Many colleges have magazines and journals that have articles in them. There are some that you can contribute to as a past graduate. Not all have this but it is worth looking into to see if yours does this as well.

8. Write list articles

Creating list articles can be time-consuming work. Some people will contract this out to have a list on their site that will allow them to attract readers with a longer, comprehensive piece. List pieces are some of the most requested type of blog article that people like to read. The thing is they can take a bit depending on how long they are and what information you are using to create your blog post.

  • Find out what others are doing and writing about
  • Size does matter, make yours bigger
  • Use headers to make sure they can scan down the page

9. Become a ghost writer

Ghost writing has some of its own unique challenges that are not included in any other type of making money with writing. The thing is most people don’t think about it. I’m not sure why, but ghost-writing has developed into some kind of elusive career for the elite. It almost ranks up there with being a Private Investigator sitting in a dark office, waiting for a client to walk in with this case that is going to make you the most famous PI that has ever been in the profession. This, however, is not the case since when you are a ghost writer no one will ever know what you have done.

Here are some tips for you if you want to enter this area:

  • Learn to create in your authors voice
  • Eliminate ego, you’re giving away your creation
  • Do not write something you do not agree with – it will show through
  • Build your credentials before beginning as a Ghost Writer

10. Create white papers

White papers can be a lucrative market if it’s for you. One of the best ways to look at them is to think of them as comprehensive sales packets for proposals on new ideas, products, or directions in B2B companies. These documents are usually long but they are priced between $1000 and $5000 for their creation. They are created to cover all aspects of a product or topic.

11. Writing contests

Writing contests are self-explanatory. There is not much I need to say to define them or how they work but some would not think of this as an income. You can google for tips on ways to make sure the contest is legitimate and to make sure you don’t get scammed. I found tons of things telling you things to avoid and include to get a leg up on other competitors too. Here are some tips for being a good competitor.

  • Make sure you know what the contest is about
  • Find contests that are related to things you’ve already done
  • Be prepared to pay, many have a fee you pay to join the contest

12. Create and sell websites

People practice this like real estate. It doesn’t require a real estate license though. I’ve often heard of people refer to their sites as their online real estate. And, just real estate, you can create it, build it into what others are looking for, and sell it for a profit. Here are some things to remember when working on earning money this way:

  • This method includes multiple activities like affiliate marketing, writing web copy and others
  • Make sure you have your niche defined and set out in the site
  • Make sure you have correct punctuation, spelling, and legibility
  • Make it look professional
  • Know the audience the site is written for better than anyone else

13. Affiliate Marketing

This is one of the methods that many people are referred to when they think of creating income online through writing. This writing is normally in the form of blogging. It’s normally done by creating content and then selling ads to the visitors of your blog. There are others ways of doing this such as using pins on Pinterest but in the interest of staying on the topic of making money with writing I figured I would only talk about this particular method.

Tips to remember when doing this:

  • Do not expect to create an instant income
  • Be consistent and don’t get discouraged
  • Build up your blog and then use Media Vine rather than ad sense

14. Paid Medium.com posts

So if you haven’t heard of Medium.com I will give a short overview of what it is so you know how you can use it. It is considered and open platform for everyone as well as a publisher. Everyone can publish to their site as long as it doesn’t violate their terms of service. This includes you as well.

Here are some things to remember when creating content for Medium:

  • Your headline is more important than the copy
  • Eliminate CTA’s (Calls to action)
  • Don’t make it a sales letter
  • Remember list posts are your friend

15. Create online courses

This can be a lucrative opportunity in writing online. The thing is that most use it after they have built a following which includes their email list. These are created with their opt-ins on their site. There are other places you can do this also though. You can do this at places like Udemy and other course sites online.

Here are some places where you can create an online course:

  • Click4Course
  • LearnWorlds
  • Podia
  • Ruzuku
  • Teachable
  • Peer 2 Peer University

16. Coaching

This is an area where people are making a lot of money and it coincides with creating an online course. The course is often sold through a website where they teach you to do what they have already accomplished. In fact, some people like Carlton Sheets, are giving what was their original course away for free in the hopes of getting people to sign up in their coaching program.

17. Writing web copy

This type of writing is creating content for various types of web pages and content needs. If you do this to make money you will be creating the copy for things like landing pages, about pages, blogs, and SEO material to help rank higher in Google rankings. This type of writing requires some specialized knowledge such as what affects SEO metrics, how people think and what takes place as they read various types of copy from SMS to sales material.

There are some things you must remember when writing web copy:

  • Know you customer and how they think
  • Know the stages they go through as they read sales material
  • Recognize what makes them buy and what happens after they purchase something

18. B2B copy work(instruction materials, etc)

If you are like the rest of us, you have already encountered this type of writing. This is simply content that is created within businesses that is used for their training material. They have this material created to keep as manuals, training videos, and whatever else they use including computer training materials.

19. Proposal writing

Proposal writing and grant writing are similar to each other. These types of writing can become a career because you develop a reputation within a certain niche and people learn about you and want you to help them get their proposal accepted. The difference is that proposal writing is a much broader term that includes grant writing as well as things like grant writing as well as other things like business proposal writing.

20. Grant writing

Grant writing is a term familiar to non-profits. It’s used other places but in non-profits they use it to get funding for their organizations. Grant writing refers to the task of getting funding for whatever organization they are seeking funding for.

What makes a good grant writer?

  • Dedication to the goal as well as to your organization
  • Creativity in finding grants for writing
  • Someone who is willing to study what makes a good grant request

21. New technology content (cannibis, AI, etc)

This is a one of the newest industry available and a market ripe for writers of all types. It is a market that may require some research to be able to market it the right way but there is a lot of potential money to be made. There are writers needed for topics such as culture, technology, and lots of education. Both, but especially cannabis, is a new market that is growing very fast with quick changes in our understanding of it and our recognition of its potential.

Here are some potential sources for writing:

  • GreenEntrepreneur.com – business, tech, lifestyle
  • Leafly – marijuana and various health conditions
